My First Camera

I don’t know why I bought a camera. Longing? Our new life, since November 2011 has been lived in an RV, a Motor Home, a self propelled house on wheels. Being charitable we live in an < 280 square foot New York city apartment regularly subject to earthquakes and hurricanes. Also space is limited. But. We landed at a trailer park in southern Georgia where the rent is cheap both for the RV and a couple of storage sheds. So I’m building a darkroom in a utility shed.

I purchased the Burke & James 4X5 press camera at the beginning of 2022. I rationalized the purchase by convincing myself that I could use a commercial lab and limit myself to four photographs each month. The wheels on the bus go ’round and ’round, ’round and ’round, until they fall off. The commercial lab allowed me to demonstrate that I can make repeatable, known, exposures on 4×5 film, so that is a good thing. But I’m a control freak and the siren call of “If only” took control.
